Top 20 Things I wish I knew (or did) when I First Started with Usborne:

1.       Read your manual.  Read your manual again.  Read your manual again.
2.       Share your excitement for the books and business right away – don’t wait “until you understand the program.” You can sponsor new Consultants and your upline will help train them.
3.       Get to know the hostess program.  It may seem overwhelming at first but each element is there for an important reason and after you understand and use the program, you’ll love it.
4.       Remember that it is your business and you can customize any aspect of it (e.g., the hostess books and gifts) any way you want!  Seek ideas of others, then make it your own.
5.       OrderPro Online is the standard for ease and efficiency in ordering.
6.       The FTP and web site posts are amazing resources.  Fellow Usborne consultants are incredibly generous with their time and willingness to answer questions, etc.  You can search for specific subjects. Just don’t spend too much time there. J Use your time productively.
7.       Book fairs and booths can be more about developing leads than making a hefty profit.
8.       Read the books with your kids and read those your kids aren’t into yet.  Giving you great product knowledge.
9.       Get to know your catalog, sections, bindings, sets, index, table of contents etc.
10.   Create a checklist of what to take for shows so you’ll be relaxed and not worried about forgetting something like calculators.
11.   You don’t have to authorize credit cards home shows.  You can do it later, but make sure you can read the number and expiration date while you are there.
12.   Your upline and message board are invaluable resources.  If for some reason, they can’t answer your questions, then call the home office.
13.   Resist the urge to spend too much right away on all the books you love and on things like giveaways, stationery, etc.
14.   This is not a get rich quick opportunity or a job.  It is a business.  Treat it like one and it will grow.  You will, however, earn income from the beginning and this is a terrific source of immediate gratification.
15.   Consider buying MS Publisher.  The files that are shared are terrific.
16.   Always have a hostess packet, books and a catalog in every car.  People who have done this have been pleasantly surprised how handy they’ve been.
17.   Call your sponsor each week with the good news.  It will help you focus on the positive aspects of your business and create a positive relationship with your upline.
18.   The hostess allowance is based on retail guest purchases and does not include sales tax or shipping.
19.   Get a freebie checking account to make sure you are prudent about what you buy for your business.
20.   Start sharing the business opportunity, as well as the hostessing opportunity, with all your leads.  They may well like to join you – but need you to invite them!  So they don’t feel as if they are stepping on your toes.  And they probably won't book a show, or sign up, unless you invite them!
